Conjunction Junction—What’s Your Function? 🤣 When a Patient Gives You a Blog Without Even Knowing It! ❤️
Hey Family and Friends!
As y’all know, I am a Phlebotomy Technician, and I have been drawing blood for a long time.
After being a stay-at-home mom for about 22 years, I went back to school and became what I like to call a professional blood finder—a phlebotomist! 🩸😂
And one of my favorite sayings is:
“I love what I’m doing, and I’m doing what I love.” ❤️
Over the years, I have heard just about everything from patients.
“How many tubes are you drawing?”
“Can you use a small butterfly?” 🦋
“I have small veins.”
“My veins roll.”
“How long have you been drawing blood?”
“Are you a good drawer?”
And, of course, the classic:
“Here comes the vampire!” 🧛🏽♀️🤣
I thought I had heard it ALL.
Apparently, I had not.
Because the other day, one patient gave me something brand-new.
And when I tell you this man had me laughing—I mean LAUGHING! 🤣🤣🤣
What Are You Smiling About?
I had all my supplies in my hands, with my butterfly needle dangling, and I walked into my patient’s room with the biggest smile on my face.
Now, if you know me, you know I smile.
Sometimes I don’t even need a reason.
I’m just happy! ❤️
So I walked into this gentleman’s room smiling from ear to ear, and he looked at me like I had absolutely no business being that happy while carrying needles. 🤣
He said something like:
“Why are you coming into my room smiling like that—with all those teeth showing?!”
😳🤣🤣🤣
Sir!!!
Then he wanted to know exactly what I had come into his room to do.
I looked at him.
His nurse looked at me.
I looked at the nurse.
The nurse looked at him.
And before I knew it, we were all laughing!
Then he hit me with it:
“Conjunction Junction… WHAT’S YOUR FUNCTION?!”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wait a minute!
Did this man just take me all the way back to Schoolhouse Rock?!
I was standing there holding my blood-draw supplies thinking, Somebody has got to be playing a joke on me! 😂
And when I tell you that man had his nurse and me in stitches—HE DID!
I don’t think I had ever seen his nurse laugh that hard before.
And somehow, in a room where somebody was about to get stuck with a needle, we were all laughing.
Now THAT was funny!
But y’all already know me.
Once the laughter settled down, my brain started working.
Ohhhh… I have to blog this one! 😂
So Let’s Connect This…
The phrase the patient was referring to comes from the classic educational cartoon Schoolhouse Rock!
The song is called “Conjunction Junction.”
It taught children about conjunctions—words such as and, but, and or that connect words, phrases, and ideas together.
In other words, the function of a conjunction is to CONNECT.
Wait.
Did somebody say connect? 😳
Now we’re getting somewhere.
Because suddenly that funny little question didn’t sound quite so silly anymore:
What’s YOUR function?
My patient was probably just wondering why this smiling woman had entered his room carrying a needle. 🤣
Who are you?
Why are you smiling so hard?
Why is there a butterfly needle dangling from your hand?
And most importantly, ma’am… WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH ME?! 😂
But after I thought about it, that question became much bigger than that hospital room.
What’s your function?
Not your job title.
Not what’s written on your résumé.
Not what position you hold.
Not how much money you make.
I’m talking about purpose.
What has God placed inside of you that is meant to connect with somebody else?
Maybe Your Function Is Connection
A conjunction connects.
And sometimes, so do we.
Maybe God has positioned you to connect someone to encouragement.
Maybe your function in someone’s life today is to connect them to hope.
Maybe it’s kindness.
Maybe it’s wisdom.
Maybe it’s prayer.
Maybe it’s laughter.
Maybe it’s healing.
Maybe it’s simply being the person who walks into a room smiling when somebody else hasn’t had anything to smile about all day. ❤️
We can become so focused on our occupations that we forget our function may be bigger than our job.
Yes, my job that day was to draw blood.
I had an order.
I had my supplies.
I had my butterfly needle.
I had a task to complete.
But maybe my function in that particular room wasn’t only to collect blood.
Maybe for those few minutes, my function was also to bring joy into the room.
And look at what happened.
The patient laughed.
The nurse laughed.
I laughed.
Three people who probably would have continued with an ordinary workday suddenly shared a moment of joy.
All because one man looked at me and basically asked:
“Conjunction Junction… What’s your function?” 🤣
Your Function May Change From Room to Room
Here’s another thought.
Your function in one person’s life may not be your function in another person’s life.
To one person, you may be an encourager.
To another, a teacher.
To another, a listener.
To someone else, you may simply be the person God uses to remind them:
You are seen.
You matter.
Don’t give up.
That’s why we shouldn’t underestimate the little encounters we have with people.
You may think you’re just going to work.
You may think you’re just walking into another room.
You may think you’re simply having another conversation.
But God may be using your presence to make a connection you know absolutely nothing about.
Sometimes ministry doesn’t come with a microphone.
Sometimes purpose doesn’t happen behind a pulpit.
Sometimes your assignment walks right into your ordinary workday.
And sometimes…
It is sitting in a hospital room waiting for you to walk through the door with a butterfly needle dangling from your hand! 🦋🩸🤣
The Question Still Stands
So now I’m passing my patient’s question on to you.
Conjunction Junction… What’s YOUR function?
What are you connecting people to?
When you enter a room, what comes with you?
Peace?
Joy?
Encouragement?
Compassion?
Hope?
Faith?
Laughter?
Because perhaps our greatest function isn’t simply what we do.
Perhaps it’s also what God allows to flow through us while we’re doing it.
❤️ Aha Moment
Your occupation may tell people what you do, but your function can reveal why God placed you there.
You may have walked into the room to perform a task, but God may have sent you there to make a connection.
So the next time someone asks you:
“What’s your function?”
Don’t just think about your job.
Think about your purpose.
And whatever God has placed inside of you…
CONNECT IT! ❤️
