Hey, Blog Friends and Family! ā¤ļø
GIVE ME A BREAK! GIVE ME A BREAK!
BREAK ME OFF A PIECE OF THAT KIT-KAT BAR! š«š¤£š¤£
Now, yāall already know this blog is about to go somewhere!
And believe me, it certainly did!
Who would have thought that a simple statement from one of my patients would turn into a hilarious musical moment, a workplace lesson, and a powerful reminder about respect?
Well, grab yourself a Kit-Kat Bar, sit back, and letās talk about it! š
Because sometimes in life, you really do need somebody to GIVE YOU A BREAK!
š Give Me a Break, Lady!
Well, Blog Friends and Family!
Thatās exactly what I told my patient after he looked at me and said:
āGive me a break!ā
Now, yāall already know!
Here I am standing there with that needle š in my hand and those long blood tubes 𩸠ready to jab away! š¤£š¤£
I know that sounds scary, but itās not!
Just stick out your arm!
āI GOT THIS!āĀ š³
No worries!
Regardless of where Iām drawing your bloodā¦
I SURE NUFF GOT THIS! š
Now, I know you donāt know me, and I sure donāt know you, but since you said, āGive me a break,ā I figured I might as well give you one!
And thatās exactly what I did!
I gave him a nice, gentle poke!
And guess what?
It wasnāt nearly as bad as he thought it would be.
You know what makes me laugh about some of these encounters?
Patients come in looking at that needle like Iām about to perform major surgery! š³š¤£
But when itās all over, what do they say?
āTHANK YOU!āĀ š
Wait a minute!
I just stuck you with a needle, collected your blood, filled those tubes, and youāre thanking ME?!?!
Now thatās something! š
But seriously, I appreciate those moments.
Because when a patient says thank you, it often tells me something important.
They appreciate the care.
They appreciate the gentleness.
They appreciate that I respected their comfort and made an uncomfortable experience a little easier.
And sometimes, those two little words mean more than we realize.
Thank you!
ā¤ļø What Kind of Energy Are You Giving Off?
Let me ask you something.
Are you experiencing moments in your workplace, home, church, or anywhere else where people genuinely appreciate your:
Kindness
Work ethic
Generosity
Politeness
Patience
Respect for others
Or let me turn that question around.
What kind of vibeāor as they say today, what kind of ENERGYāare YOU giving off?
Are you giving people kindness, peace, encouragement, and understanding?
Or are you walking around distributing:
Meanness?
Selfishness?
Horrible manners?
Disrespect?
And a whole lot of unnecessary ATTITUDE?!? š³
Because, baby, some people donāt need a Kit-Kat Bar!
They need a whole CASE of them!Ā š«š¤£š¤£
And before you think Iām pointing fingers at somebody else, let me tell you something.
I had to examine myself, too!
š When the Workplace Vibe Takes a Wrong Turn!
Can I be honest with you?
Can we have a personal moment?
I recently experienced something at my workplace that sent my emotions into a crazy spiral! š
And when I tell you it caught me off guardā¦
BABY!
It caught me OFF GUARD!
But guess what?
I BOUNCED BACK!Ā ā¤ļø
That moment reminded me of something very important.
I am saved, but I am still human!
Yes!
I am saved, sanctified, Holy Ghost-filled, water-baptized, and I LOVE THE LORD!
But let me tell yāall something!
As long as Iām living in this flesh, I still have real emotions!
I can get upset.
I can feel hurt.
I can become frustrated.
And yes, sometimes I might feel like POPPING OFF and saying exactly whatās on my mind!
WITHOUT CURSING SOMEBODY OUT! š¤¬š¤£
Now, I know better than that!
But sometimes, even when youāre trying to be peaceful, somebody will test every bit of that patience you thought you had!
And all you want to say is:
GIVE ME A BREAK!Ā š«š
Let me tell you what happened.
All I said was something along the lines of:
āCan we play some other music, please?ā
I wasnāt familiar with the music that was playing, and I thought it would be funny to suggest changing things up a little.
Thatās it!
Thatās all!
I was trying to be the funny girl, lighten the mood, and bring a little joy into our work area.
Because, yāall know me!
I like to laugh!
I like to joke!
I like to enjoy myself!
And since Iāve got to draw about TEN THOUSAND PATIENTS IN ONE HOURā¦
CAN WE AT LEAST HAVE SOME GOOD MUSIC?!?Ā šš¤£š¤£
Okay, okay!
Not literally ten thousand patients!
But some days it sure feels like it!
So why not enjoy a little music while weāre working?
Right?!?!
Wellā¦
Apparently, my coworker was NOT having it!
And when I say he wasnāt having itā¦
HE WAS NOT HAVING IT! š³
What I thought was an innocent, humorous suggestion quickly turned into an unpleasant confrontation.
And before I knew it, the whole atmosphere had changed.
My attempt to bring a little laughter into the workplace had gone completely LEFT!
Now, if I had known that my little comment would cause such a reaction, perhaps I would have approached it differently.
But I didnāt know.
And things escalated from there.
ā¤ļø Saved, Sanctified, and Standing Ten Toes Down!
Now, let me tell yāall something.
There was a time in my life when I would have remained quiet.
I would have allowed people to speak to me any kind of way.
I would have swallowed my feelings.
I would have walked away hurting while pretending everything was okay.
But BABY!
THOSE DAYS ARE BEHIND ME!Ā ā¤ļø
As I continue becoming the woman God created me to be, I am learning something powerful.
I can be kind without allowing someone to mistreat me.
I can be respectful without surrendering my dignity.
I can be peaceful without becoming a doormat.
And I can love people without giving them permission to disrespect me!
Now, donāt misunderstand me.
Iām not saying I handled every part of that confrontation perfectly.
I am still learning.
I am still growing.
And God is still working on ME!
But I am saying that I have reached a place in my life where I understand that my voice matters.
My feelings matter.
And my boundaries matter!
When the conversation became disrespectful, I stood ten toes down and made it clear that I would not accept being cursed at or spoken to disrespectfully.
I told him not to speak to me that way again.
And when the conversation continued in a direction that was no longer productive, I told him that I did not want further unnecessary conversation between us.
Because sometimes you have to know when to stop talking!
And sometimes the wisest thing you can do is allow space for everybody to cool down.
Now, was I upset?
ABSOLUTELY!
Did I feel strongly about what happened?
YOU BET I DID!
But hereās what I am learning in this season:
Standing up for yourself does not mean you have to tear somebody else down.
You can establish boundaries with firmness while still allowing God to work on your heart.
And just because you forgive somebody doesnāt mean you have to pretend that what happened was acceptable.
Forgiveness and boundaries can exist in the same room!
Oh, somebody needs to hear THAT! ā¤ļø
š Respect Is Not Optional!
Let me tell you something Iāve learned.
People often learn what you will accept by what you repeatedly allow.
And there comes a time when you have to say:
āNo, sir!ā
āNo, maāam!ā
āNot today!ā
āNot tomorrow!ā
āAnd not next year!ā šā¤ļø
I refuse to believe that being a kind person means accepting mistreatment.
But I also refuse to allow somebody elseās behavior to turn me into a person I donāt want to become.
Because what good is it to win an argument if I lose my peace in the process?
WHEW!
Now THAT will make you think!
I donāt have to match somebody elseās anger.
I donāt have to raise my voice just because somebody raises theirs.
And I donāt have to prove my strength by being hurtful.
Sometimes strength looks like speaking calmly.
Sometimes strength looks like walking away.
And sometimes strength looks like saying:
āI deserve to be treated with respect, and I will extend that same respect to you.ā
Now thatās the kind of energy I want to carry!
š Even My Patients Deserve Boundaries!
Let me bring this right back to my patients.
Before I draw someoneās blood, I donāt just walk up, snatch their arm, and stick a needle in it!
WHAT?!?!
Can you imagine?!? š³š¤£
How rude would THAT be?
Instead, I politely ask:
āDo you have an arm preference?ā
Some patients say yes.
Some say no.
Others may tell me which arm has been giving them trouble.
And some have been through so many blood draws that theyāre simply tired of seeing another needle!
But hereās the important part.
I ASK!
Why?
Because their comfort matters.
Their concerns matter.
Their dignity matters.
And their right to make decisions about their own bodies matters!
Patients are already dealing with enough.
Some are battling illnesses.
Some are tired.
Some are frightened.
Some are frustrated.
And others are simply worn out from being poked and prodded!
The last thing they need is somebody coming into the room with a bad attitude and treating them like they donāt matter.
Kindness doesnāt cost me anything, but it can mean everything to somebody else!Ā ā¤ļø
And thatās when I started thinking about what my patient really meant when he said:
āGIVE ME A BREAK!ā
Maybe he was saying:
Give me a break from all these blood draws!
Give me a break from filling up all these vials! š§Ŗ
Give me a break from the constant poking!
Give me a break from the wear and tear on my veins!
Give me a break so I can rest!
And you know what?
I UNDERSTOOD!
I really did!
But I also understood the importance of the blood work his doctor had ordered.
So rather than making him feel pressured, I wanted to help him feel comfortable enough to make an informed decision about proceeding.
And thatās when something funny happened!
š« Give Me a Break! Give Me a Break!
Yāall!
Itās like the Lord dropped that old Kit-Kat commercial right into my spirit! š
You remember that song!
āGIVE ME A BREAK! GIVE ME A BREAK!ā
And before I knew it, I started singing!
And guess what?
MY PATIENT STARTED SINGING WITH ME!Ā š¤£š¤£š¤£
Now, here we are!
Iām drawing his blood!
Heās singing!
Iām singing!
And what could have been another uncomfortable blood draw suddenly became a little musical moment!
BABY!
WE HAD OURSELVES A WHOLE KIT-KAT COMMERCIAL GOING ON IN THAT ROOM! š«šš¤£
And the best part?
The blood draw went smoothly!
When I finished, I looked at him and said something along the lines of:
āI hope that song stays with you ALL DAY LONG!ā
āAnd when you go to sleep tonight, I hope the only thing you hear in your head isā¦ā
GIVE ME A BREAK! GIVE ME A BREAK!Ā ššš
Now, yāall!
THAT WAS FUNNY!
And as I stepped out of his room, the nurses had overheard us and were laughing, too!
I LOVE THIS! ā¤ļø
One little song.
One gentle blood draw.
One patient who needed a break.
And a whole lot of laughter!
Sometimes it doesnāt take much to change the atmosphere.
Sometimes all it takes is a little kindness, a little patience, and a willingness to meet somebody where they are.
And perhaps a Kit-Kat Bar! š«š¤£
ā¤ļø Two Different Experiences, One Powerful Lesson!
Now, hereās where these two experiences come together.
In one situation, I had a patient asking me for a break.
In another situation, I found myself needing a break from a disrespectful encounter.
Two different people.
Two different situations.
But one very important lesson.
EVERYBODY DESERVES TO BE TREATED WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT!
My patient deserved compassion.
My coworker deserved respect.
And guess what?
SO DID I!
And thatās the part I donāt want us to miss.
We cannot expect people to respect our feelings while ignoring theirs.
We cannot demand kindness while refusing to extend kindness.
And we cannot expect peaceful relationships if weāre constantly creating hostile environments.
Now, that doesnāt mean everybody will agree.
Oh, absolutely NOT!
We are all different!
Different personalities.
Different backgrounds.
Different experiences.
Different opinions.
And yesā¦
DIFFERENT TASTES IN MUSIC! š¶š¤£
But our differences should never become an excuse for disrespect.
We can disagree without becoming disagreeable.
We can correct without humiliating.
We can establish boundaries without intentionally hurting somebody.
And we can create a peaceful environment without pretending that conflict never happens.
Peace doesnāt mean the absence of boundaries. Sometimes boundaries are exactly what help protect the peace!
š What Does the Bible Say?
Jesus teaches us in Matthew 22:39 (KJV):
āThou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.ā
Now, letās think about that for a moment.
Love your neighbor AS YOURSELF!
Not less than yourself.
Not only when theyāre being nice to you.
Not only when they agree with everything you say.
But love them as yourself.
And that love includes treating people with dignity, kindness, patience, and respect.
Romans 12:18 (KJV) also reminds us:
āIf it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.ā
Did yāall catch that?
AS MUCH AS LIETH IN YOU!
In other words, we are responsible for doing our part to pursue peace.
We cannot control how everybody else behaves.
We cannot make everybody speak kindly.
And we certainly cannot force everybody to agree with us.
But we can control how we choose to respond.
And sometimes, that response requires wisdom, patience, self-control, and a healthy boundary!
Because the goal is not to prove that we can out-argue somebody.
The goal is to reflect the character of Christ, even when our emotions are being tested.
And believe meā¦
SOMETIMES THAT IS A WHOLE TEST BY ITSELF! š³š
š” Laurettaās Aha Moment!
Hereās my Aha Moment, Friends!
Sometimes the person saying āGive me a breakā isnāt asking for a candy bar. Theyāre asking for compassion, understanding, patience, or simply a little respect!
My patient needed a break from the discomfort of another blood draw.
I needed a break from being spoken to disrespectfully.
And perhaps my coworker was having a difficult moment of his own that I didnāt fully understand.
Thatās why we must be careful how we approach one another.
Because we never really know what someone is carrying on the inside.
But hereās the BIGGER AHA!
You can give someone grace without giving them permission to mistreat you!
OH, THATāS GOOD! ā¤ļø
You can be loving and still have boundaries.
You can be forgiving and still require respect.
You can be saved, sanctified, Holy Ghost-filled, water-baptized, and STILL be a work in progress!
And most importantlyā¦
You can stand ten toes down without stepping on somebody elseās dignity!
NOW THATāS GROWTH! ā¤ļø
I am learning that becoming a stronger woman doesnāt mean becoming a harder woman.
It means becoming a wiser woman.
A woman who knows when to speak.
When to listen.
When to laugh.
When to walk away.
And when to let God handle what she cannot control.
Because I donāt want my past hurts to determine how I treat people in my future.
I want my healing to show up in my conversations, my decisions, my boundaries, and my relationships.
And I want people to experience kindness when they encounter me, even if we donāt always see eye to eye.
š« One Last Thing Before You Go!
Friends and Family, letās do better!
Letās be more patient with one another.
Letās speak with kindness.
Letās respect each otherās boundaries.
Letās stop using anger, intimidation, or hurtful words to prove a point.
And letās remember that everybody is fighting battles we may know absolutely nothing about.
You donāt have to agree with somebody to respect them.
You donāt have to tolerate disrespect to demonstrate love.
And you certainly donāt have to lose yourself trying to keep everybody else happy.
So the next time somebody saysā¦
āGIVE ME A BREAK!ā
Before you respond with an attitude, ask yourself:
Could this person need a little compassion?
A little understanding?
A little encouragement?
Or perhaps just a moment of peace?
And if all else failsā¦
BABY!
BREAK OUT THE KIT-KAT BAR!Ā š«š¤£š¤£š¤£
Because life is too short to spend every moment fussing, arguing, and carrying unnecessary tension!
Letās spread some love!
Letās share some laughter!
And letās treat one another the way we would want to be treated.
Because the sweetest thing you can give somebody isnāt always a piece of chocolate. Sometimes itās a little kindness, a little grace, and a whole lot of RESPECT!Ā ā¤ļø
Now, go on and have yourself a Kit-Kat Bar!
But donāt forget to give somebody else a break, too! šš«
Until next time, Blog Friends!
Keep smiling, keep growing, and keep becoming the person God created you to be! ā¤ļø
