Hatred: A Cruel Enemy
The Battle Within Begins Long Before the Battle Around You
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
Hey Family!
Today’s topic was inspired by an old classic movie called Son of Fury: The Story of Benjamin Blake.
As I sat sipping my tea, I happened to look up at one particular scene that immediately caught my attention.
One man asked Benjamin,
“Do you know how to fight with your fists?”
Benjamin confidently replied,
“Yes, I do.”
As Benjamin began taking off his jacket to prepare himself, his opponent didn’t even give him the opportunity. He immediately started throwing punches.
Benjamin fought back, but the other man kept coming.
Then something happened that completely changed the scene.
The man grabbed a whip and began striking Benjamin over and over again. Benjamin fell helplessly to the floor, yet the blows continued. With every lash, I noticed something more than physical violence.
I saw hatred.
Not ordinary anger…
Hatred.
His eyes seemed to go blank as though he had been overtaken by memories from the past that he simply could not let go of. It was as if every unresolved wound, every offense, every painful memory had surfaced all at once.
He couldn’t stop.
Finally, people on the other side of the door forced their way into the room and pulled him away from Benjamin.
Only then did he seem to come back to himself.
Benjamin lay unconscious on the floor.
What a heartbreaking scene.
It was so realistic that for a moment I forgot I was watching a movie.
It made me stop and ask myself…
What happened in this man’s life that caused so much hatred to build inside of him?
Was it jealousy?
Resentment?
Bitterness?
Pride?
Unforgiveness?
What could cause one human being to hate another so deeply?
That question stayed with me long after the movie ended.
Ironically, it also caused me to reflect on my own recent experience in the workplace.
I’ve found myself asking similar questions.
Why would someone harbor so much resentment toward another person?
Where does that kind of hostility come from?
I honestly couldn’t understand it.
When I walk into the room, I can literally feel the tension.
It’s almost tangible.
It’s heartbreaking to know that someone can dislike you so intensely when you’ve done nothing to intentionally harm them.
Because I value peace, I requested mediation in hopes of resolving the conflict—or at the very least establishing healthy boundaries so we can work together respectfully.
That experience led me back to the same question…
How does hatred get that far?
Because hatred rarely begins as hatred.
It starts much smaller.
It begins with an offense that was never forgiven.
A wound that never healed.
Jealousy that was never confronted.
Fear that was never surrendered.
Pride that refused to humble itself.
Little by little, those unchecked emotions begin to take root.
Eventually…
The heart changes.
The Root Before the Fruit
Hatred is usually the fruit, not the root.
Before hatred ever appears, something deeper is happening inside the heart.
1. Hurt
Unhealed emotional pain can slowly harden into resentment.
“You hurt me, and I never dealt with it.”
2. Fear
Fear of rejection, loss, or being replaced can cause someone to see others as enemies.
“I’m afraid they’ll take what belongs to me.”
3. Pride
A wounded ego often refuses correction or humility.
“How dare they treat me that way?”
4. Jealousy & Envy
Comparison can quietly poison the heart.
Instead of celebrating someone else’s success, a person begins resenting it.
“Why them… and not me?”
5. Bitterness
The Bible warns us about allowing a root of bitterness to grow (Hebrews 12:15).
Bitterness develops when pain is rehearsed instead of released.
6. Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness keeps old wounds alive.
Over time, anger settles into hostility.
7. Deception
Rumors.
Assumptions.
False narratives.
Hatred often grows when people believe lies instead of seeking truth.
Before Hatred Can Live…
Before anyone allows hatred to fester in their heart, they first stop guarding it.
Hatred doesn’t arrive overnight.
It grows quietly.
A small offense becomes resentment.
Resentment becomes bitterness.
Bitterness becomes hatred.
Hatred eventually produces destructive words, destructive attitudes, and destructive actions.
That’s exactly why Proverbs 4:23 tells us:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Whatever you permit to live in your heart will eventually show itself through your life.
❤️ Heart Check-Up with Mental Health & Wellness
A healthy heart is more than a physical necessity.
It is the foundation of your emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Just as we schedule routine checkups with our physician, we should regularly examine the condition of our hearts.
Ask yourself…
Am I carrying unforgiveness God is asking me to release?
Have I allowed hurt, jealousy, anger, or bitterness to settle in my heart?
Are my thoughts producing peace or producing anxiety?
Am I feeding my faith or feeding my fears?
Whatever continually occupies our hearts eventually shapes our minds.
A heart full of bitterness eventually speaks bitter words.
A heart full of fear struggles to trust.
But a heart surrendered to God begins producing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Mental health and spiritual health are deeply connected.
Although many factors affect our emotional well-being, we should never overlook the condition of our hearts.
When we release what no longer serves us…
Forgive quickly…
Renew our minds with God’s Word…
And allow the Holy Spirit to heal our hidden wounds…
We create room for God’s peace to flourish.
❤️ Heart Prescription for Today
Guard your heart.
Renew your mind.
Pray without ceasing.
Forgive quickly.
Release bitterness.
Choose peace daily.
Trust God with what you cannot control.
❤️ AHA Moment
Perhaps the greatest danger of hatred isn’t what it does to the person we dislike…
It’s what it quietly does to us.
Hatred imprisons the heart, clouds our judgment, steals our peace, and slowly transforms us into someone God never intended us to become.
The enemy doesn’t always need to destroy your life.
Sometimes all he has to do is convince you to hold onto an offense long enough for it to become your identity.
Don’t give hatred permission to live where God intended love to reign.
Today, make the decision to release what has been weighing on your heart.
Because healing doesn’t begin when someone else changes.
Healing begins the moment you allow God to change your heart.
Until your next AHA Moment…
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
— Ephesians 4:31–32 (KJV)
