Monitor Your Confessions
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” — Proverbs 18:21
Hey Bloggers!
I have an interesting topic that I want to challenge you with today.
What happens when we don’t monitor our confessions?
What do I mean by confessions?
I’m talking about the words that continually proceed out of your mouth. The things you repeatedly say about yourself, your future, your family, your health, your finances, and even your relationship with God.
Have you ever noticed that some people can find something negative to say about almost everything?
“I’ll never get ahead.”
“Nothing ever works out for me.”
“I knew this was going to happen.”
“I’m just not good enough.”
Those aren’t just words…
Those are confessions.
Do You Remember This Game?
Growing up, we used to play a hand-clapping game called “Sailor.”
Two people—or sometimes an entire circle of friends—would clap in rhythm while saying:
“Have you ever, ever, ever in your long-legged life seen a long-legged sailor with a long-legged wife?”
“No, I never, ever, ever in my long-legged life saw a long-legged sailor with a long-legged wife!”
It was hilarious!
The faster the rhythm became, the more difficult it was to keep up.
The moment you missed a word…
The moment you broke the rhythm…
You were out.
The goal was simple:
Pay attention to every word.
Isn’t that interesting?
Maybe we should treat our everyday conversations the same way.
Monitor Your Mouth
This childhood game reminds me of how we should monitor our confessions.
Jesus said,
“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
The Bible also tells us:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
(Proverbs 18:21)
Think about that.
If your mouth continually speaks defeat…
Don’t be surprised when defeat becomes your expectation.
If your mouth continually speaks hopelessness…
Hope becomes harder to recognize.
If your mouth continually agrees with fear…
Fear begins directing your decisions.
But the opposite is also true.
Speak faith.
Speak hope.
Speak God’s promises.
Speak life.
I Know…
I know…
I know…
Some of us have become comfortable speaking negatively because we think it protects us from disappointment.
“If I expect the worst, I won’t be hurt.”
Really?
Or…
Has pessimism simply become your comfort zone?
Let me challenge you.
What if God actually wants to exceed your expectations?
What if you’re talking yourself out of the very thing you’ve been praying for?
The Bible says,
“Without faith it is impossible to please God.”
(Hebrews 11:6)
If God said it…
Why not believe Him?
A Flat Floppy Bucket
Here’s what I call this mindset:
A Flat Floppy Bucket.
Think about it.
A bucket is designed to carry something valuable.
Water.
Fruit.
Grain.
Treasure.
Something with substance.
Now imagine a bucket that is flat…
Flimsy…
Floppy…
It looks nice on the outside…
But it cannot hold anything.
It’s useless because it has lost its purpose.
Negative confessions work exactly the same way.
Every pessimistic word punches another hole in your bucket.
Every faithless confession causes it to collapse a little more.
Eventually, when God pours opportunities…
Blessings…
Healing…
Peace…
Wisdom…
And favor into your life…
Nothing stays.
Not because God failed.
But because your confession never developed the capacity to hold what He wanted to give you.
Speak What God Says
Many people have spoken destruction over their own situations and then blamed God for the outcome.
God didn’t do it.
Their confession agreed with fear instead of faith.
Your words matter.
Your confession matters.
If your confession doesn’t line up with God’s Word…
Don’t speak it.
Speak what Heaven says.
Not what fear says.
Not what doubt says.
Not what your circumstances say.
Changing Your Bad Confirmation into Positive Affirmation
How do we do that?
It starts by changing what we repeatedly tell ourselves.
Negative confirmations such as:
“I can’t.”
“I’ll never change.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“Nothing ever works out for me.”
These reinforce defeat.
Instead, replace them with affirmations rooted in God’s truth:
• “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
• “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
• “God has a purpose and a future for my life.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
• “I am more than a conqueror through Christ.” (Romans 8:37)
• “Every day I am growing, learning, and becoming who God created me to be.”
The Positive Impact
When you replace negative confessions with positive affirmations, you begin to experience:
• A healthier mindset.
• Greater confidence.
• More hope during difficult seasons.
• Less fear and self-doubt.
• Better decisions rooted in faith instead of emotions.
• A positive attitude that encourages everyone around you.
Remember…
Your thoughts become your words.
Your words become your actions.
Your actions become your habits.
Your habits shape your future.
So today…
Don’t be a Flat Floppy Bucket that can’t hold what God wants to pour into your life.
Strengthen your confession.
Speak life.
Speak faith.
Speak God’s promises.
And watch your bucket begin to hold everything Heaven has prepared for you.
Until your next Aha Moment…
May your words always agree with God’s promises, your faith rise above your fears, and your confession become the foundation for the life He has called you to live. Keep speaking life, because what you consistently declare today has the power to shape your tomorrow.
“A flat floppy bucket isn’t empty because God refused to fill it; it’s empty because it lost its ability to hold what was poured into it.
